What is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix timestamp counts time from January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC.

Seconds vs Milliseconds

Some systems store timestamps in seconds, while JavaScript and many logs use milliseconds. A millisecond timestamp is usually 13 digits; a second timestamp is usually 10 digits.

Why UTC Matters

Unix timestamps represent an absolute moment in time. Displayed local time can change by timezone, but the timestamp value points to the same moment.

Example

1718352000 seconds
1718352000000 milliseconds
